DVD Drive acting as Harddrive ?

Hi

I have an ACer Aspire 5100
Bios is PA 3.13 ( i think the latest version)
1 gig of ddr 2 Samsung Ram
AMD Turion 64
Windows Xp Media Center

Hi i hope someone can help as this machine is a real Mess

It will not boot when the DVD rom is in place , as then refuses to see the Harddrive due to it been set to a dule IDE chanel

So i remove the drive and bios see's my Harddrive and boots

I have treied to diasble the Standard dule chan but windows has problems as well as non of the service start - i have no problem re-formating but as i cant change anything in Windows as no services will start and my dvd rom thinks its a harddrie and wont boot from CD its a bit gard

So far i have

Tried to restart the services in Msconfig and such
Replaced the DVD Drive (still same issue )
Reseated the Ram and processor (just on the off chance)
boot in Safe mode


I am at a loss as how i can sort this

Hi mate,

have you tried restoring the bios to factory defaults (& reset CMOS if easily reset on your laptop)??

also i've got a few questions

1) Is the hard drive SATA or PATA (IDE)
2) does both the CD drive and HDD show in the list of devices when the computer first boots up?
3) Have you disconnect any peripherals (usb stick etc) before booting?
