I just installed a DVD-RW drive and my computer fails to recognise it. When the computer boots, if I open the drive the system freezes and have to go through the problematic adventure of getting the computer to load up again whether it's in safe mode/normal/previous configs etc.
The drive came with no instructions or cables. I am using a...

    Dell Dimension 4400
    2.0 GHz P4
    768mb Ram
    80GB

    etc

I would tell you what make the drive is but that would require opening the tower up for the tenth time today.

    Any ideas?

Is the drive set as a master drive (on the secondary IDE channel)?

Also try a different IDE cable to see if it helps.

    Problem solved. :)
I switched the DVDRW drive to a slave drive so the CD/DVD ROM drive is the master.

    Thanks
