I have a LG DVDRAM GSA-41678B, which is supposed to be a DVD writer. Thing is, although it can read dvds, whenever I insert a blank dvd it says "0 bytes free, 0 bytes available". This means that I can't write anything. Even when using Nero, it still says that there isn't enough memory to write on, regardless of the size of the file I'm writing.

I have tried upgrading the firmwire, but it didn't work. My box is running on Win XP/SP2.
    Any suggestion is welcomed.

what media are you using ?
have you tried using CDrs or CD-RW, as drives use a different laser to burn CDs & DVDs[ot]can't find your drive on net[/ot]

    Welcome to hardwareforums maest

I am assuming that you can still read DVD's with the drive?

Don't expect this to work... but have you seen the CD/DVD lens cleaners? There a CD/DVD with small brushes glued onto them and a movie with a countdown written onto the disk (so you know how much longer cleaning is going to take).

You can get them fairly cheaply so i would say its worth a try!

If we don't manage to find a solution and you choose to replace the drive, make sure you don't get ripped off when buying it (DVD burners are quite cheap now, you shouldn't be paying any more than £25 incl P&P)

    GSA-41678B - Google Search

it seems to be mentioned in the last result (unfortunately for me, Its all in Russian)

Ok, so I've tried several dvds: some Traxdatas (which I have been told that suck) and some Benqs which are supposed to be decent. The driver sees them, but can't write anything on them. Moreover, the drive shows as a CD Rom in My Computer, which is abit odd, because it reads DVDs. Sorry if I'm reapeating myself.
Oh, and it's LG DVDRAM GSA-4167B. Bad place for a typo, eh?

I was suspecting it was a hardware problem, since I have recently installed a fresh win copy. I haven't seen lense cleaners anywhere, but I figure I can get my hands on some.

Oh, and thanks for the welcome. Cheers.

whats the make & wattage of your PSU? and just to be sure, whats the make and model of ALL the hardware in your computer (so we can see if your PSU is suitable, and hopefully rule it out)

Ok, so I'll just post a list of my hardware bits and hopefully somebody will be able to tell whether PSUs are the problem or not.
    So:
Intel Pentium 4 CPU on, dunno, it says MS ACPI-compliant System, whatever that means.
    HD: Maxtor 6Y080L0
Other drives:the troublesome LG GSA-4167B, Mercury CR-48XGTE (cd-writer, think this one is malfunctioning too) and the device manager shows something called "MP1220W QVS120H SCSI CdRom Device". What the hell? Never seen that one before. Plus, I only have 2 dvd/cd roms. Gonna google that one.
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 (AGP 8X)
Network adapter: Realtek RTL8169/8110 Gigabit Ethernet
Sound Card: Intergrated in motherboard, something from SoundMax.

Is there anything else I should mention?

Dear Lord! The Mercury CD-WR isn't working properly either. It's incredibly frustrating! Whenever I try opening a blank CD it shows an error message stating "G:/ is inaccessible. Incorrect function.", so I can't open it. It does read CD's though.
If it matters, I've set the DVD Rom as secondary master and the CD Rom as secondar slave.

    EDIT: sorry for double posting.

Another EDIT: I feel stupid. I only needed to tick Enable CD recording in the properties window of the CD-WR drive. That hasn't solved the DVD-Rom problem though.

Did you build this computer or did you buy it? If you bought it do you know the model? (and the make, ie Dell)

It was built for me, so ya...

I still don't understand why my PC sees 3 dvd/cd roms. It just shows another drive called "DVD Drive". The other two show as CD Rom Drive (even the dvd rom, which changes into DVD rom drive when I insert a DVD)
I've tried uninstalling all of the drives and then rebooting but they still show up. Could i be because of the way the drives are physically connected (master slave etc)?
