External Hard drive

I want to try and build an external hard drive i.e. buy a case seperately from the hard drive and put them together. How do I do this, can I use a hard drive that you could use internally also? What in the spec. of the case should I look out for to match it with a hard drive? Any help much appreciated.
 
Strange idea you have there...I've never heard of it before. Well, if you wanted to build an external hard drive like the ones on the market today (which plug into USB ports and perhaps a power outlet too), I'm not sure how you would do that. The only way I can think of is to get a hard drive and get some extra long cords connecting it to the computer like a normal hard drive. It wouldn't really be external in a sense. It WOULD be external, but it would be a bitch to plug in, et cetera. That's the only way I can think of. I would say just buy one, dude. Much easier. Maybe someone else can help you more.
 
Just buy an external USB v2 HDD chassis. They cost about $15-30/US, I don't know what they go for in the UK. They have an IDE connector on the inside, and USB and/or firewire on the outside. Piece of cake.
 
Good point there. I didn't think of that at all...perhaps I should invest in one. Me old 40 GB hard drive is loud, very slow, and needs power to run instead of just a USB plug...sigh. Old technology sucks...

You can get them at all major online computer supply stores I think, here's a selection at OcUK.

You would still need a power connector for the HD, as it needs the 12v it would normally get.
 
I am using an external USB Fujitsu HD 40GB(Laptops HD).............. If you go with Laptops HD then you dont need any power with that.........Just use USB Case and connect it with any computer......... Laptops HD is very small, light weight, dont need any bullshit adaptor etc................. I bought 1 with the case for about $185 NZ currency two years ago....... Now it is cheap here for about $130 with the case........... and yea, whenever you connect it with any computer, computer detects it as a Mass Storage HD.......



Easy..........Go for it........dont wait.
