Finally Building (first) New PC!!

Hi. After months of reading, researching and working overtime, I’m finally going to build my first PC! However, though I have gained a basic knowledge, I’m still far from an expert, so I’ll definitely need some help in the process. I think what I’ve picked out so far is good, but some double checking first of all might be good.

So here goes.

Total: ~$2050 Canadian. No monitor, keyboard or mouse.


I also have some questions. These are just pre-build; I’ll probably order the parts next week, and make another post at the time needing help with every little thing >.<.


1. First, does everything seem good?

2. The DVD writer and DVD drive that I have chosen…Do they burn/read CD’s aswell by default, or do you need a combo drive to burn/read DVD/CD’s in the same drive? (Or would it be best go get 1 DVD writer and 1 CD writer.)

3. If you could slash 100/200 dollars, where would you choose?

4. Where does one obtain computer building supplies, including:
Isopropyl Alcohol
Arctic Silver 5
Anti-static wrist strap
Zip Ties (for cable management)
Cables (will I need any additional cabling, btw?)
PSU Cable extensions?

5. Anyone have a MODERN how to build a computer website that’s appropriate for first timers?

6. What’s the difference between these two cards?

Is the second one OEM or something? If so, what’s that mean when talking soundcards?

Go to youtube.com and type in "how to build a computer". I would give you the link but it's offline right now. Those specs are incredible. As for best price I would go to newegg.com. It's in American currency but that shouldn't be a problem. I would choose the Gamer's sound card. WIth sound cards the pretty much all have same quality so.. If would recommend having a pro build your computer. Those are some pretty nice parts and it would be a shame to see them killed by static or mishandling (no offense).
For the case, the bigger the better so the Antec is a pretty good choice. If you are noise freak go with watercooling. The TT tribe is my favorite because it's external. Again I would have a pro install it. The ASUS drive only burns CD's but the pioneer does both DVD's + CD's so you are set. All those accesories are buyable at a local hardware/computer store. Even on newegg you can get some of them. Since you are up in Canada I can't give you too much suggestions. I would go with XP PRO rather than home. There are some better features and not much more expensive. The PSU should be a Hyper or Enermax or Antec but then again they are more expensive. You shouldn't have too much problems with OCZ. Again Antec or Enermax or Hyper I prefer but if you want OCZ go for it. I also recommend buying some case fans the Panasonic 120MM and TT 80MM are some of the quietest. It will get hot in there and the PSU won't be enough venilation. Make sure the HDD stays cool. Xoxide.com is another good website.
