Hey guys, I posted the below message already in the ASUS forums:

Junior techie here, maybe I should leave building stuff to the pros haha, anyway, here's my deal:

I built my rig around late August 2006, using P5W DH Deluxe mobo and the new (at the time) Intel chips (Core 2 Duo). Everything was going fine until recently.

    1. About a week-1.5 weeks ago, I turned on my pc. Went to BIOS, XP load screen, and then it would just sit at the black screen (with the cursor blinking in the upper left) for minutes at a time (at least 5 minutes). I restarted a few times, both soft (reset) and hard (power down then up again). Did this at least 4-5 times. No desktop in sight. The last time I just left it for I'd say about 20 minutes, and finally it went to windows desktop. All is well? Not so fast.

    2. I got a new eSATA external HDD recently, and whenever I turned it on (while my PC was already on) it would freeze up the PC for about 10 seconds while it was recognizing the drive. Don't know if this has anything to do with causing/as a result of #1, but I figured I would bring it up because hey, freezing at any time is not good.

So, yesterday I get home from work and fire up the computer...wait, but it doesn't. I hit the power button and it does NOTHING. No fans, no power supply fans, no external LEDs, absolutely nothing. It may as well have not even been plugged into an outlet. Checked surge protector, fine. Socket, fine (monitor etc are plugged it to surge and tried that socket). Ugh, time to take apart. IT roomie and I started to diagnose...

-Unplugged piece by piece with attempting to power up to find the faulty piece. Nothing...went thru GFX card, memory, HDs, etc. No response.
-After opening up the case, the green LED on the mobo is ON with my power supply in the on position. If I turn the power off, of cousre the LED cuts out.
-To try to test the on switch, I took off the jumper to the on switch and tried routing thru a screwdriver directly on the mobo pins, w PSU and proc plugged in, no luck.

So at this point it's either 1. the PSU, 2. the MOBO, or 3. the proc. I wired the PSU to itself (black to green) using this article: ASUS P4PE-X green LED goes on, no power - please help... and it fired right up. PSU works.

So I'm left with either the mobo or the proc being bad. What to do now? The green LED works just fine w the PSU in, can that LED be ON (solid, no flickering, and surely no response to the PC on switch) and the board be fried? As a last ditch effort I'm taking out the CMOS battery and putting it back in. I read somewhere that that might "save" an otherwise dead board. I will attempt to start it up after I submit this post.

What to do next? Sorry for the long post, but I tried to be as detailed as possible. Thanks in advance guys!!!

    Welcome to HWF :)

If the processor has issues, the computer will turn on but produce a series of beeps. If you don't get any power at all, and the PSU appears to be working, it's definitely caused by the motherboard. If you still have any warranty, I'd suggest to get it replaced.

Hey, thanks for your post. Yes, I purchased the mobo in Aug 06, and it has 3 years, so I still have plenty of time to RMA it...will most likely be tonight or tomorrow after I run a few more tests.
