We have an HP Pavilion 553w circa 2001. Recently we had the motherboard replaced. The technician included a CD with a set of instructions called 'Tattoo Extraction Procedure.' But the instructions looked very complex, so we simply started up the computer and it worked fine.

Later we wanted to do a system recovery, so we inserted the first of the original HP system recovery discs and received the DOS message 'These System Recovery CDs do NOT support this HP PC model'. A couple of days later the computer froze.

We rebooted with the Tattoo CD and tried running the program. When we input the command (C:\ DISKARC /r /v 0x01 (followed by the name of the Tattoo file to be extracted)) in DOS in order to write the 3.5" diskette that's required in the re-tattooing process, we received an error message saying 'Error writing Track: 0 error: 2 Address mark not found'.

We then tried to bypass the diskette and see what would happen if we tried using the program in DOS without it. We got the same message along with a string of text representing various HP computer models. We tried reformatting the diskette, and even tried it with a new diskette, but kept getting the same error message. (Incidentally, our model, the 553w was not on the list, so we chose the closest sounding one, 551w.)

Now we are at a standstill. Does it sound like the drive boot order is faulty? Should the 553w have been on the program's list? We have no idea. If anyone can advise us on how to proceed to get this computer tattooed successfully, and/or up and running again, we'd really appreciate it. We have a call in to the person who replaced the motherboard to hopefully walk us through it over the phone, but he takes ages to return his calls.

I'm unfamiliar with the software. I would get ahold of HP and ask about that software and why it isn't working. There's lots of reasons why, but it's hard to say exactly what. I'd keep calling and ask for a supervisor so that you can get it going. I don't know what Tattoo is like, so I'm hard pressed to know the proper instructions for it.
