gateway pentium 2 start-up problem

Big Geek
I have a old gateway pentium 2 computer my friend gave to me. When I try to boot-up, the only thing that comes on is the power supply fan. Their is no beep during post, no video, I do not hear the hard drive working. CD player workers when I put a cd in it. Tried the monitor onto another computer and it workers

The video card is build into the motherboard.

Could the video card gone bad or the CPU or something on the motherboard.
Could the CMOS battery make this happen.

I think their is something really wrong with this computer.

Do not want to get rid of computer if its something simple to fix.

Please help if possible
Thank You

Have you peeked inside to see if there are any other fans that should be spinning? Sometimes there are some, but sometimes there aren't. You just have to check with these pre-built rigs.

Without knowing the exact system, I can't say for sure everything, but I have a few ideas as to what might be stuff you can try to remedy the problem.
1.)Clear CMOS. I don't know where it is, but it should be somewhere near the battery and labled something like "JBAT" or "CLCMOS". It may even say it inside the case. If it doesn't, you should be able to pull the battery out. Do that, and leave it out for an hour before popping it back in. That'll clear CMOS for sure. If not, that's not the problem.
2.)Try a bigger power supply that you know works. It's possible that the system isn't getting enough juice from the current unit, and can cause the problems you're describing.

The CMOS battery simply keeps enough juice for the BIOS to remember whatever settings you made. If you don't have it in, it will boot up, but any changes you make in BIOS will be forgotten. Now you would need to make sure the Clear CMOS jumper is back in it's original position, which is typically covering Pins 1-2, not 2-3.

If it's not booting up after that, I'd try another power supply. Doesn't have to be a 600W monster, and even a crappy 300W should be plenty to test it out.
