i am trying to get ftp to work so i can share my hard drive to certain users, i am using a program called cesar ftp, and i have added users, i can connect using internet explorer, and one person can connect using ftp software, but everyone else i try to add, they cant connect, it always says connection timed out for them, or ftp folder errorm is this somthing to do with the firewall on my router? how can i solve this problem, i have being trying for nearly 4 hours now.
I dont know much about FTP networking but maybe there is some permissions in the firewall or FTP program set wrong or not set at all! In my experience i always have to turn off my firewall!
the thing is, how do i turn the fire wall off, i am talking to this guy on msn, he says i should disable the dhcp parameter, but i aint sure if i should do that.
You could try to disable the DHCP parameter, most firewalls you can just right click on them in the taskbar and check disable or shutdown!
yes, i dont have a firewall on, its the hardware firewall in the router that seems ot be causing this, if i disable the DHCP parameter, will i not be able to access my router setup and have to reset router?
Are you sure the problem is at your end? I ask this because you said that one person could connect which tells me that the problem may not be yours but based with the people who are trying to connect. What program did the person who could connect use and do the other people have firewalls in the way?
You need to set your FTP server with a static IP in the same subnet as the other PCs on your local network. Next, you need to do port-forwarding in your router to port 21 on your FTP server. Finally, it'd help to get yourself a free dynamic DNS account (dyndns.org) so your friends don't have to use your IP address to connect.
hmm, its complicated for me, i am using cesar ftp, how do i set the ftp server ip to thr same subnet of the other pc's on my network? one person managed to connet using ftp software, but no one could connect with internet explorer, anti-trend, could you give me some detaild help please, i am finding it difficult allready.
Your simplest answer is if the FTP software works then just use the FTP software for now at least. One thing I'm unsure of though, are the other users trying to connect on a private network or across the Internet?
accross the internet, some live hundred of miles away from me, i dont want to try to make them all use ftp software.
Willhub, no offence intended but you clearly do not understand the fundamentals of networking. What you're trying to do is similar to jumping on the Autobahn without having ever driven a car before -- the outlook isn't optimistic. Perhaps you should learn a bit about the rudiments of networking and security before you attempt to host an FTP server?
If one person was able to connect, then its likely the other users are doing something wrong. whats the IP you are telling them to connect to, PM me it and I'll see if I connect.
ok, i will asap, even the person who could connect using software, could not connect using internet explorer
What they are doing wrong is using IE, it seems that the FTP server is working fine but IE is doing something unusual that isn't working. A web browser is designed to work with HTTP, FTP is an entirely different protocol using diferent tools. If you want to provide FTP access then you should either get the users to use FTP tools or you could set up a web server on the same machine pointing to the same directory. Having said that I would have to agree with AT, what you are trying to do isn't difficult but you do need to know the basics. Besides getting a working web/FTP server up and running is easy to do, getting a working, stable, secure, functional web/FTP server requires quite a bit more work especially if you're opening the server to the 'net. Learn the basics of networking and security first, then you should know what to do. As always I'll be happy to help you out with any questions you have but you do need to do your homework. By the way, I sincerely hope you're not planning on providing upload access, are you?
