Hard Drive problem

I have a two hard drive set up comprising of 2 x 250 gig maxtor SATA. The configuration is a stripped raid one. The drives have been in a home built computer and running well for a year, that was until last week when an intermitent problem developed. One of the drives (I am assuming its one) powers down, you can hear it happen and the system then (as it would) freezes. The problem can happen soon after start up or well into a session, so I am pushing out a heat problem. It is then okay again after a restart. Power supply is a Seasonic 550w. Any ideas anyone and how do identify the problem unit???

I'd turn off the RAID array and use just one drive. If either drive doesn't turn off during a session or doesn't show any other problems, it could be a RAID issue.

Thanks for the info and forgive me if I am wrong but would it not be the case that if I disable raid and used one drive my system wouldnt work, is it not the case that my files are shared between th two drives?

Yes, sorry. I got RAID 1 mixed up with RAID 0.
Is your RAID controller hardware or software based?
What motherboard do you have?

Hi Pelvis, Thanks for getting back, the motherboard is an MSI K8N Neo4 with an on board raid controller using silicom image software.

Have you tried rebuilding the array using the nVidia SATA ports?

Hi Again,
Well the situation went downhill I tried switching to nVidia, situation did not improve. To cut a long story short I decided to try both drives out singularly and as luck would have the first drive i set up failed before I had even loaded anything on it. I am now using the good drive and am negotiating with Overclockers to see if they will take back the sick drive. I have never had a drive fail on me before and I am now glad that I did regular back ups.
