I've noticed a file called ntuser.dat and a ntuser.dat.log. the dat.log file will build in size then go back to one kb. It keeps doing this over and over some file sizes it builds are bigger than others.
I don't know if I should delete it or leave it alone.
    Thanks

hmm.... what OS are u using? is this XP?

at a guess its something to do with the user accounts, as the file is called NTUSER

i have 1 for the admin account and one for "all users"

    thers also one in "C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile"

if you open the one in "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator" using notepad this string is at the top:-

    "t t i n g s \ a d m i n i s t r a t o r \ n t u s e r . d a t"

as u can guess the file doesnt open very well, i think "ttings" is setting so i would leave the file alone!

also, ".dat" means data [i would think] so its harmless in this case beacuse its just settings for something

Micro$haft had this to say "A wide range of applications create files with this file extension but with different file formats."

its just a hidden WINDOWS configuration file, DONT delete it and if you dont want to see it any more just go tools>folder options>view tab> and then check 'do not show hidden files and folders' !

Yea you shouldn't delete that file. As pelvis said it is a system file. The dat.log file changes size because it is a log file. It logs information then when it gets too big or at a time specified by your system it empties itself. The reason it reads 1 Kb and not 0 Kb is most likely because it stores some residual information when it empties itself. You can also open it in any text editor (Notepad, Wordpad, Word) and see the contents, if you know what you're looking at. Also a bit of advice, if you want to know what a file is simply enter the filename including extension into Google and almost 100% of the time it will be in the first or second result. And I would recommend you turn "Hiding files and folders" and "Hiding system files" so you don't accidentally delete something very important.
