HI I am hoping someone out there can help me. Yesterday I was happily tapping away uploading files on my ftp site then all of a sudden i got a "this page cannot be displayed" no settings have been changed and no new software has been installed. My router is a dlink 624+ i have read through the manual and have chenged some settings since and nothing has worked. After talking to technical support they suggested it might be something blocking local addresses so I unistalled all my spyware protection and antivirus and I turned of windows firewall. Still cant get through. I also tried plugging my modem into my pc and I could access my ftp site!!!!! It has got to be something on my router. I tried to use cute ftp to connect and got the following error: [LEFT]STATUS:> Getting listing ""... STATUS:> Resolving host name ftp.glendawilson.net... STATUS:> Host name ftp.glendawilson.net resolved: ip = 66.96.217.229. STATUS:> Connecting to FTP server ftp.glendawilson.net:21 (ip = 66.96.217.229)... ERROR:> The remote host actively refused the attempt to connect to it. 1) Verify that the destination server name or IP address is correct 2) Verify that the connection port number is correct (under Site Settings | Type tab). 3) The remote server may be temporarily or permanently inaccessible (try again later). 4) Verify that you have chosen the right protocol (SSH2, SSL, FTP, etc.) and have setup all required options for that protocol. 5) Verify that the destination IP address and port numbers are correct. 6) The remote server may be refusing multiple connections from the same client. Try using only one connection thread when connecting to this particular server (Site Settings | Options). 7) Try pinging the address. 8) If you are using a router, verify the router is up and running (check by pinging it and then ping an address outside of the router). 9) Do a traceroute to the destination to verify all routers along the connection path are operational. 10) Verify that your subnet mask is setup properly. 11) Verify that your local software or hardware firewall is not blocking outbound connections originating from CuteFTP. 12) Verify that your anti-virus software is not at fault (try disabling it).[/LEFT] I can access my site (which is quite rubbish by the way) on someone elses machine just not on my network. I have also upgraded the firmware of the router Someone please help
Click on 'Start' and then 'run'. Type 'cmd' and hit enter. Once you have a black shell dialogue, type: Code: ping 66.96.217.229 If that returns no replies, try this: Code: ping ftp.glendawilson.net If you get echos back from either attempt, you do have a route to the server. Please try that and we can troubleshoot from there. I can verify that the site is not physically down, because I can actually make the initial connection to the server: ...at that point, were I authorized to access your server, I would put in my username and password to connect. By the way, you might try FileZilla, a free and powerful FTP tool, instead of CuteFTP and see if that makes a difference for you. All the best, -AT
Hi Thanks for trying to help I have tried to ping it and get a "request has timed out" I know a little bit about computers but obviously not enough. I just cant understand why it suddenly works and then doesn't when I haven't done anything. How can a router change it's settings without someone inputting them I am just sooooo confused. You cannot ping your ftp server, but I can just fine from here (southern California, USA). That tells me that either you are running local firewall software on your PC that is interfering with your connections, or the server is actually blocking requests from your neck of the woods. In the former case, disable/remove any software firewalls. You already have a router, you don't need them. In the latter case, contact your hosting company and attempt to troubleshoot the issue with them.
Just out of interest, if you go to a command line and type "ping www.google.com" does is work or do you get an error message?
Hi I can ping www.google.com with no probs and I have tried to disable all the firewall software and I also disabled microsoft antispyware but I still cant get to any ftp sites. Thanks for trying to help. All I can do at the moment is log onto my ftp sites using a direct plug in to my modem. Boohooo
Have you tried ipconfig /renew ,and also could try netstat -a to view all incoming and outgoing connections and on which ports!

Well i think FTP port 21 isnt open, thats all i can see from it! Im not the best at networking of any kind nut ive found netstat -a has always helped me in some way or another!

Don't open port 21 on your router unless you plan on running your own FTP server from within your home network. Connections to FTP don't originate from port 21, they originate from a random high-numbered port. I really don't think the router is the problem. In addition, netstat isn't going to help you, since the server isn't running from your laptop. Did you try any of the things I suggested? Thanks, -AT
I have a few points I'd like to make. First of all you said that you had a working FTP connection up to a few days ago, did you change anything at all? Install new software? Alter the routers configuration? Alter your network set-up? Secondly the fact that you can ping Google successfully but not your site means that it's unlikely to be a firewall problem. You could try using the command-line ftp program. From the command-line try "ftp www.glendawilson.net" and see if you can connect, if not try "ftp ftp.gnu.org" which is a publicly-accessible ftp site. If the connection is successful then it's not a firewall problem on port 21 though there might be a firewall rule blocking that specific site (though this is unlikely). As for the result from traceroute, the asterix's don't mean that the route is blocked, rather that the gateway is not responding to the programs requests. Per the traceroute man page (which is quite technical unless you know the basics of networking fairly well) this could be because of an error at the servers end rather than yours. Why I can connect and you can't is beyond me to be honest but I can only guess that there is some kind of slowdown being caused by your router as opposed to an outright block. The only thing I can suggest is to press the reset button on your router (assuming you know how to re-configure it) and see if that changes anything. By the way do you have any other computers connected to the router?
I have three computers on my router 1 wireless and 2 cabled I tried the ftp thingy and couldnt get to my site I got the message "unknown error number" I could get to the other ftp site. I haven't installed any new software but to be on the safe side I did a system restore on 2 of my machines. Could it be Spyware or anything like that? I have also tried all of the above suggestions but still no joy. Including resetting the router. I'm just about ready to throw the towel in but thanks for trying to help
Glenda, are you running any software firewalls on the computers which are experiencing the problems? If so you can safely disable them, since your router protects them sufficiently as long as they're connected through it. Norton Anti Virus security suite comes with a firewall, so you may have a software firewall without realizing it. If all else fails, you could download and burn a live linux CD like Ubuntu or Knoppix, boot to that, and try from there. Don't worry, it won't change your existing Windows OS in any way, 'live' Linux distros boot purely from the CD. You can even remove the router and connect your broadband directly to your PC while it is running Linux, since it is much more secure than Windows (just remember to connect it back up to the router before you boot into Windows). That way, you can remove two variables simultaneously in your troubleshooting effort: Windows and your router. If that effort should likewise prove fruitless, you should contact the hosting company which is providing your FTP server. They may have a configurational problem on their end which would prevent access from your system. All the best, -AT
