Hi i re-formated by HDD recently and too my horror i did not back up some important files. I was wondering if it is still possible to retrieve them. Help is greatly appreciated.

Large like 10's of thousands. Sorry, it was a painful lesson but there's not much else you can do about it.

I disagree. Try and find a copy of MiniPE-XT, which is a bootable CD OS. It has many utilities on it, including a variety of data recovery tools. I'm usually able to recover most files off formatted pc's, like .doc's, .jpeg's, etc. Other then that, I think you're out of luck :P
its a hard lesson to learn :) anyway the best program I have used is http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ you have to pay for it though :(
getdataback for ntfs and fat is the one I've had the best luck with.
It's on Mini PE as StimpE mentioned...Have a look on your favorite site, it's pretty easy to find.
By the way, expect the process of searching for lost MFT entries to take about an hour or two, the building of the list to take another hour or so, and then you will be facing HEX-renamed directories most likely - not the folders as you originally named them. I find it's easiest just to search for filenames you know and then browse for the folder containing that file in GDB.
