I was wondering if anyone here could give me information on the maximum cpu speed i can attain with this PC...i have purchased a slot 1 to socket 370 adapter and am currently in the process of purchasing either a pentium 3 933mhz cpu or a 1.2ghz celeron cpu. I have purchased a sufficient heatsink and fan for cooling of both these processors i'm just really wondering if my motherboard can support these speeds...both processors are 100mhz bus which is what my current 550mhz pentium 3 is so do you guys think i'll be able to run a 933mhz or 1.2ghz cpu with my motherboard. any answers would be much apretiated...i'd hate to get one of those processors just to fry my mobo... additional system info currently running p3 550mhz cpu with 100mhz bus 128mb RAM (upgrading to 226mb) 10gb hard drive 64mb AGP graphics card windows 98 OS thanks in advance!
Hi I think you are faced with the same problem I had when I looked into upgrading my dell. I had a BX440 (intel) board which could only support up to 850Mhz. Something to do with the multiplier....(?) I would guess that it will be the same with your board. However, I cannot see how you can damage your board. The worst that will happen is that yor CPU will work slower than its full speed. If you want to try and identify your board and see what you can do with it, try running AIDA32. If you already have this info, come back and let the forum know.
my motherboard is a INTEL PENTIUM III PROCESSOR BOARD ASSEMBLY - Compaq 041Ch 440 BX (Intel AGPSet FW82443BX SL2T5) ,Slot 1, FSB 100,BIOS 686 T2 08/21/99. PC is a Compaq Deskpro EP/SB 6350...so what do you guys think?
Also do you think there is any way i could override the bios multiplier limit or whatever it is that disallows me from getting to 1ghz? From the reasearch i've done it appears to me that the motherboard can support the speed it's just something in the bios that "turns down" the processor to a set limit (possibly to avoid overclocking?) and i could be completely wrong about everything i just said and if so that wouldn't be suprising...but if someone could clear me up it'd be much apretiated!
I will tell you what I really think. You might not like it but hey.... You are flogging a dead horse here. :O You are obviously not happy with the performance of the computer or you would not be trying to better it. I was very attached to my dell and more than that, I am tight as they come.... However, I can recognise an end of a line. If you want a PIII board that works go for a proper S370 board. They should not be too expensive as they are becoming older technology. You can get a 133Mhz FSB, one which will take the CPU's you bought to their full potential. The only chalange now is finding a board which will suit your case. Should not be too hard though. Good luck.....
well the celeron 1.2ghz is a 100mhz fsb so i assume it will work...i didn't purchase the pIII 933mhz for the simple fact that it has a 133mhz fsb and i didn't think it would work for my motherboard...the thing is i'm not dissatisfied with my current setup, i just upgraded from a dell dimension xps d333 with a 333mhz pentium II, 98mb RAM, 16mb tnt2 graphics card...so this system is a HUGE improvement...i'm just trying to get the most possible out of my "new" motherboard. If all i can get is 850mhz out of this board i'll be happy, i only payed like 20 bucks for the celeron 1.2ghz chip and an additional 2.50 for the heatsink and fan so it's not like i went over the edge and spent a whole bunch of money...so bottom line, is 850mhz the best i can get outta this board? and btw as soon as i get the money i will be building from scratch a new PC look for posts about that in the build section of this forum in a month or so...i got the compaq for 58 dollars including shipping all and all a good deal i think...what do you guys think?
And btw i think i metioned this earlier...i have a slot 1 to socket 370 adapter with ajustable voltage settings for s370 chips such as the coppermine pentiums 3s and the celerons...
