I am using the Grub boot loader right now and booting between Mandrake, Ubuntu, and Win XP. I would like to know how to set Win XP as the primary boot, than hide the boot loader unless say F3 is pressed at start up or something like that.
I've never used grub myself, but if you edit the grub config file you may be able to change the boot order. its located in: /boot/grub/grub.conf
If you want to simaltaniously boot between Linux and Windows, you need to keep the boot loader the way it is, regardless of whether you like it If you wanted to completely remove it, you need to go into the Windows Recovery Console - available as an option on the XP CD. Once you are in the terminal, you just type 'fixmbr'. By doing so, you will no longer be able to boot into Linux
Restoring your windows mbr will mean you won't be able to boot to linux. however there isn't a lot that windows can do that linux can't. btw, you can restore you mbr by booting from your mandrake/iva cd and choosing more options with F1.
What is your first choice now in Grub? and which installation was last? In other words, did mandrake install Grub or Ubuntu? I am pretty sure there is a way of editing Grub either by GUI or through the terminal. But I need to get home to my (sweeeeeet) PC. [ot]After numerous attempts the only way I manage to dual-boot succesfully Mandriva and XP is with LILO. Grub just will not do it.... go figure....[/ot]
Right now I have Ubuntu first, Mandrake next, and XP last. I want XP as the primary boot. I have found that Grub has a hidemenu command, but now I can't find my grub.conf files to change the primary boot and put in that command.
I was going to suggest that I know a way to do it in Mandriva (maybe the same as Mandrake...?) but I really do not know how to do it in Ubuntu. Obviously I am reffering to the GUI way of doing things as opposed to the command line. Sorry.....
If you have not done so yet, I would suggest posting this question in the Ubuntu support site. http://ubuntuforums.org/ I am sure it is entierly my fault but I have to say thet I am no longer a fan of Grub. Did not work for me..... LILO just worked. Painless and straightforward. You know, you could try and replace Grub with LILO and try again. See if it works... just a thought... hah:
