RAM size that is, you pervert. Legion Hardware takes a look at how 256MB, 512MB, 1GB & 2GB capacities in single- and dual-channel configurations affect the gameplay. After recently spending a lot of time comparing 1GB and 2GB dual-channel memory kits in an effort to learn which configuration offered the best bang for you buck, many other questions and ideas arose. Currently I believe 1GB of memory is still the sweet spot for most gamers as it’s a perfect balance of price vs. performance. However, avid Battlefield 2 players will probably agree that there is a need for 2GB of system memory when playing this game. Gamers that play other massively multiplayer games will also see benefits from the larger 2GB memory capacity. For the folks that seem to think having 2GB is necessary, most FPS games aren't going to get much of, if any, boost from going past 1GB. In fact, at least one test had 1GB performing better than 2GB, albeit by a small amount. I guess you might want to read it and see for yourself.
Yeah I'd say 1gig will be the sweet spot for a little while now. When budget basement computers ship with 512Mb's of ram 2gigs will probably be the way to go.
It all depends on the price and how much RAM is needed by games and apps. If BF2 and FEAR are indication, then, yes, 2GB is probably not out of the question. For most people, if they don't play certain games or use certain apps, 2GB is largely still in the area of diminishing returns. I remember when 256MB was still considered server level amounts and that 128MB on a desktop was huge. 2GB will probably be standard within 2-3 years easily.
