You can just use a normal computer for a server, for hosting games I think a 1GHz CPU should do, 256mb RAM. If you run Windows, you'll probably need better hardware than if you run linux, but still its not much.

Probably as many as your hardware can cope with. With ut2k4 as an example, you can the dedicated server software listening in ports 7777 and any other that ut needs. Then you could also host a CS game listening on a different port.

You'll need the server software for the game. Why would you want to host more than one game at once.

Exactly. There is server grade hardware, but these are intended for use in mission-cricitical situations. It's high-dollar stuff for a very good reason. You don't need that stuff for your own game server.

Have a fast hard drive (7200RPM or faster) and have 1GB of RAM with a 1GHz+ CPU, and you'll be fine.

Minus keyboard, mouse, and monitor, you can put together a box that is more than sufficient for a game server for under $400.

    Sempron 2600+ Retail $68
    Gigabyte GA-K8N51GMF $59.99
    Kingston ValueRAM 1GB PC3200 $75.99
    eVGA GeForce 6200TC 128MB PCIe x16 $38
    Western Digital 80GB SATA2 $45.99
    Sony 16x DVD-ROM $19.99
    SilverStone SST-ST365 360W $37.99
    AMS CF-1089BK mATX case $32.99
Total: $378.94 (+shipping + tax for CA, NJ residents)

I used to run a server for floating profiles and hoting games, i quit trying to host games becouse my internet connection was limited and no good for games, but i could host a file server so anyone could access the server from anyware in world using SSL Explorer, and then i ran a UT2K4 server with an Admin console that i think could be accesed from anywere in the world, and i was using a 1.2ghz celeron S, 384MB SD Ram, 250GB WD ide hdd (7200rpm) Intel 810i mobo and a 150watt power supply (changed to 300watt), 4mb/32mb intergrated graphics, DVD-ROM and a midi case, and i could run plent of stuff off that using linux, at first i used Mandriva Linux 2006.0, then i switched to SME Server which is really really good, and i dident find any problems with hardware limiting me, i am sure i would of if i installed windows server 2003 on it.
best thing about using linux is its free, and linux is more superior than windows in some ways.
