How to detect my MP3 player?

Hi guys (and gals)

Please clue me, how do I get mandriva to talk to my MP3 Player?

I have a drivers disk but it is only for mac or windows.....

Thanks for the reply. It is an unknown far-eastern make 'Xsonix'.
I tried to google for it but nothin substantial came up.

In windows these things get picked-up automaticaly as mass-storage devices.
I was just wondering if there such a 'system' for linux.
It did say in the manuall that it supports Linux 2.4.2 (if that helps....).

Yeah, Linux should pick it up automatically then. If it doesn't you can mount it with the appropriate tool in Mandriva Control Center, adding the "user" option to make it user mountable/unmountable. Typically I've found that USB HDDs 'just work' in Linux though. With Mandriva, you usually just plug it in and an icon pops onto your KDE desktop.

No, it does not pop-up as you described.
I can see it in Hardrake as sdb but it is not listed in 'Devices'.

mmmm shall I try and 'shout' for it throught mount?
 
Yeah, see if you can see it though MCC, and assign it a mount-point from there, making it user-mountable with the 'user' flag.
 
Something weird happened on the way to heaven -

I added a line in fstab mimicking my file-pool drive (ide).

It basically went a bit like this:
/dev/sdb /mnt/mp3player bla, bla, bla (really cannot remember now... I am writing from work)

When I re-booted, in 'Devices' what do I see? An Icon - Removable USB device! I have :swear: cracked it!!!
But have I? not quite.... As soon as I disconnect the device (right click, safely remove and then unplug) it disappears, obviously, but then I cannot get it back.
I can see the content through the tree on the left of the screen, when I open a file browser but trying to do anything to the files on the player really confuses the system. So, adding the line to fstab obviously made the system realise the drive was there on boot. I just need to find a way to enable this plug-n-play you (AT) were talking about......
 
Ok.....

I followed some advice from the mandriva forums.
I installed the hotplug thingy and ivman and followed a few stepps to make sure some stuff is working. I relly cannot remember everything and it has been a really long day....

Basically, What happens is that if I boot with the MP3 player connected mandriva detects it fine! So far so good. However, although I chose to remove safely, once disconnected, it will not be recognised by mandriva again.

AT, I have a feeling my installation, or one of my components is buggered (in uk english = :swear: ed). Everytime I shut down I get a mesage that an unknown application (kicker) has crashed. Does this ring a bell? I installed mandriva from a set of 3 cd's. Sometimes when I choose to install a package, i get a warning about bad signatures...... do you think it has anything to do with the installation source or maybe the actual release?

Is it worth downloading a 2005 DVD ISO and trying to install and see if it solves all these problems?

Sorry fo the question torrent...... hope you can answer them all...
 
When your installations complain about bad signatures, where are you installing the files from? Discs? Urpmi? Internet?
 
I feeel like such a freeking idiot.....

I do not get asked for the CD's so I guess it must be from the net.
I am connected as soon as I am looged in....

Is there a way of checking? I will have to check later as I am logged into windows at this minute....

Does this shed a bit of a light?
 
I definately wouldn't say you're an idiot; you're running Linux which is more than I can say for most people, no matter how technically inclined they consider themselves. But I would strongly recommend you thoroughly go through this thread.

Just to let you know that I have installed a fresh install of 2005 limited edition.

Everything is 100% hunky-dory. Everything is working perfect!!!!

MP3 player was detected straight away. It's like a different world....

So I am set to go! :cool:

I will wait untill the 2006 is released properly to the net and then upgrade,

For the moment, I am happy like pig in :swear: .
