in July i bought a 160GB IBM Deskstar which lasted 6 weeks, and the controller started resetting making the PC crash. IBM RMAd the drive but the new one i have now has started making odd clicking noises.

The PC isnt crashing yet and their software checks out that everything is fine where the last drive failed on the butterfly test.

Has anyone else had any probs with IBM?

I have an AKASA hard disk cooler on the drive and to touch its not eve luke warm so i cant see it being a heat issue.

I think allot of people have had problems with IBM drives! Everyone calls the drives deathstars or something?

I'd back everything up, the last time I heard clicking noises from my HD, and it stopped working after a week!

Are you sure the clicking noises are coming from the drive?

After their 75GXP and 60GXP problems, I won't touch IBM (or Hitatchi, which took over the Dethstar line) with a 10 foot pole. It's not a heat problem, as the 60GXPs I had had cooling on them as well, but still failed several months after I purchased them.

It does sound like something is going, so definitely back up and look into a bit more reliable drive: Western Digital, Maxtor, or Seagate.
