I've got a bit of a problem with one of my machines :-( It is an IBM Netvista 8305, and I've recently tried to add some new memory (I actually upgraded several machines' memory, and this is the only one that doesn't work :-( ) the memory type is the same as the previous memory (e.g. DDR, MHZ, CL, etc), just a single 1GB module instead of 2x 256mb. After adding and rebooting, the machine powered up, but did not output anything to the screen - no POST messages, nothing. Not even any beeps :-( I assumed the new memory might be an issue, so replaced it with the original memory. Rebooted and no joy. So, full power off, unplug, remove CMOS battery, reboot... no joy, though this time it beeps.. I barely expected it so I *think* I got it right as 1-3-3-1 beeps (which turns out to be a memory issue when you look it up, so makes sense). So, I reseated the memory and rebooted... nothing, not even beeps. So, I cleared the CMOS and rebooted. Nothing. This is where I'm stuck really.. it powers up, spins the hard disk, proc, network lights up, etc - no beeps, but no output. I thought maybe it was just a display thing - but I wasn't able to connect to the IP over the network either. Does anyone have any ideas?
Hi, some motherboard are abit finiky on what brand of memory they will accept. it's the cheap crap that has the lowest compatibilty rates. What brand of memory are you using? Have you put both 256mb modules of ram back in, reset the cmos and then tried to boot? does it post? if not, try one 256mb module of ram in one slot at a time. If no luck with any of that you most likely have a corrupt bios. btw: if it turns out to be a corrupt bios, you can look around ebay for a replacement bios chip, follow this guide on how to replace bios chip, it could possibly save you buying a new motherboard. http://www.biosman.com/remove_dip.html
