I bought a laptop off ebay the other day (£20 :) ) only to find the rom drive is dead. Ive bought another off ebay (£1 :) ) and its on its way.

Thing is im impatient and want to get xubuntu on it asap.

Is there a way of installing ubuntu over ethernet or a memory stick? Id imagine id need a floppy bootable distro just to get me started because I cant boot from my memory stick or ethernet.

Or if I plug my laptop hdd into my desktop can I copy stuff over to the hdd and install that way?

no probs, trying *nix on USB PEN myself check out Bonzai, i found it on this *nix list

BTW: i think originally i googled something like "debian KDE" on googles *nix search

Edit: Bonzai has some security issues on their site, personally i enabled temp authorize co i'm not on win but i also closed their site straight after starting download

[ot]was it an old Maxtor HDD ?[/ot]

i would take a look at the packages nfsboot & nfsbooted

    Code:
    apt-cache show nfsboot nfsbooted

I haven't used it yet, but i plan to see if i can get my laptop to netboot (or perhaps more amusing, become a netboot server with a preconfigured dban image :devilsdsd) as i have a foobared cd drive (But i get paid Wednesday, so i might finally get a DVD-RW & GPS on it)

Come again? i don't quite get what your asking! I'm going to buy a Dual layer DVD burner [which will also burn cd's] and a usb GPS... i don't think they even make blu-ray drives for my hacktop [I've dubbed it a hacktop because of how little of the original is remaining]

right, i assumed you were not getting a dual format drive, cos you put DVD-RW not DL RW + & -, sorry

BTW: i should have assumed you were not getting a plain DVD-RW
yeah, i can't find any, so your right & i'm wrong as usual, need to check before i post, but thats too much like common sense for me, sorry for the confusion

BTW: i do feel like a plank (again), thankies for putting up with me, i could blame the brain damage, but i've always being a lot of a plank

    Edit:
your as bad / mad as me, although the difference is: you know stuff & i can't remember some stuff
