Hello, I'm building a computer, and I installed my motherboard, with the RAM, processor, and then hooked up the power supply. The CPU fan starts spinning, and the case LEDs which I hooked up turn on, but there is no output to my monitor. Even though I don't have a hard drive hooked up yet, I assumed there would still be output. Also, I can't turn off my computer using the button on the case (which I've hooked up to the motherboard), I can only turn it on using it. Any ideas of what I did wrong, or why it's acting this way? Thanks!
Hi, Try taking the board out of the case and placing on a nonconductive surface like cardboard and see if it will boot. If part of the board is touching the metal of the computer case it could be causing a short. Make sure all the risers are installed in the computer case that the system board sits on. I would also reseat all cables, connectors, and expansion cards in case something is loose. Verify where the power cables need to be attached on your system board with the manual that came with the system board as well. I would also double check the power switch connector on the system board to be sure it is in the correct position. You should be seeing something on the monitor, at least the bios information before it errors out because no o/s found message. Make sure if you are using a DVI cable the monitor is set for digital, or if using a VGA cable the monitor is set for analog signal. If you have another video cable or monitor I would try switching those as well to test. I would next try resetting the BIOS by unplugging the computer and removing the CMOS coin battery for 10-20 seconds, then putting it back in and trying to boot again. If it doesnt work out of the case, I would try booting with just the cpu(and its fan), 1 stick of ram, and the video card with everything else disconnected. If you still are getting nothing on the screen, try a different single stick of ram. Try the ram in a few different RAM slots as well. If that doesnt help, I would try the motherboard's onboard video if it has it, or swap out the video card with a known working one to test. If it is still not working, then next thing I would look at to swap out would be the power supply, then the motherboard, and then lastly the cpu as they do not fail as often as the other parts do.
Thank you for taking the time to reply to my thread, I really appreciate it. I went ahead and replaced the power supply today, and all is working well.
