Whilst surfing the net on my Dell 9100 PC my internet connection closed down and my PC seemed to freeze. I then restarted it but upon selecting my personal settings a window appeared with a big red cross saying there was an Explorer.Exe error, and that the application failed to load (or something like that), upon clicking OK I was met by my screensaver and absolutely nothing else, no desktop icons, no menu bar, nothing. It wont even recognise that there is a CD in the drive. The same thing happens when I select my girlfriend's personal settings, just a screensaver and nothing. The only way to turn it off is by the button on the tower. I've heard pressing F8 on startup helps, can anyone else offer any more valuable free info rather than me paying for it to be fixed??
Hi Crackle! can you take some printscreens and upload them plz? i think you have got a bad virus, or some spyware. download a program called AD-AWARE SE Personal. This program is free to use. Have you got an Anti-Virus and a FireWall installed? You may be best off doing a fresh install of windows anyway.
Swift reply, thanks! I can't actually do anything with my PC, and so can't download anything as I have no icons to click on to open up the internet. I'm typing this from my work computer. I have got Anti Virus and Firewall installed, and recently removed a spyware program from my desktop, but that was weeks ago. What do you suggest I do in the meantime to get my icons and startup menu back so that I can use it?
Try a Reapir instal of windows, but that may ot help, if possible i would, take that hard drive out, and insert it into another computer and back all your data up, then put your hard drive back in, and do a fresh install of windows. how long have you had that copy of windows installed for?
right click the desktop > Arrange Icons > Show icons on the desktop. As for your computer, press 'windows key'+E. That will get you into the explorer at least. If you type a web address into the explorer, it will morph into Internet explorer. From there you can download antivirus+antispyware tools.
