Laptop dispaly problem

Hi

My laptop has a vertical split screen showing two thirds and a third. It shows this through bios and OS.
My question is whether anyone can tell if this is a defective screen or something like an inverter - I have been told that it is the former. The display shows normal if I plug a monitor into the external vga port. Any advice will be appreciated.

does indeed sound like a defective screen, I'd take it to my local shop and see if they can fix it.

I was told by a shop that monitor was defective and wanted independant confirmation. I was hoping that I did not have to replace the monitor due to the high cost but it doesn't look to good.
