Hi All,

I am planning to buy a 19" LCD monitor. Most probably it would be Samsung or LG or Sony if it's in my budget.

My question is, should I go for Square or Rectangular shape

If Rectangular screen, could you tell me what are the advantages over Square :)

Thank you very much

A rectangular screen (16:10) has the advantage to fit more information on the screen, and to view movies without the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. The only disadvantage of a rectangular screen is that it sacrifices height for width (the physical shape).

Thanks the reply. Yes, I do know about that Ratio which is quite advantageous to watch movies. But in general usage of my PC is *not* only about movies. I do use it for professional purposes like compiling a Linux Kernel, writing code for Embedded devices using CodeWarrior etc. Also for compressing a big Video file or Browsing with multi tabs etc. From this larger perspective will it be OK to go for a rectangular screen? Actually am more used to with square CRT monitors (17"). I am not convinced to which one to buy for till now

you won't regret going widescreen or as you call it "Rectangular shape".

from movies to coding :) so much more space to play with.

nearly right

as RH said A rectanglar screen, is actually a widescreen display it has a ratio of 16:9 unlike say regular (old style) TV's
if you compare new 16:9 with the old format (4:3)

so, if you loook at an old 4:3 TV & divide the width of the by 4 & 3 & do the same with 16 & 9 you will get the exact same or approximate numbers

for ease look back & forth at the same colored items
