It's been rumoured that Longhorn will need at least 16GB RAM, a 8GHz CPU and 1.5 TB hard-drive to run, anyone know of this is true? Looks like I'll have to seriously overclock my cluster of Socket 7 machines. :chk:

I highly doubt it since I'm running the WinHEC 05 build now and the systrem requirements aren't quite that steep.

Actually so far I've been suprised, on the test hardware it's been fairly stable especially for a beta build.

I installed Longhorn in April on a test machine and so far it's crashed 3-4 times. Win XP when I was testing betas quite often it was crashing 2-3 times a week, so as far as stability I'm noticing a huge increase so far.

When they decide to add WinFS who knows how it will affect things, but right now it looks like it's going to be a solid OS although there is still a while to go before it goes gold.

I've never said MS has the best OS. Linux, Unix, BeOS and Windows all have their strong points. For my business MS does have the best OS as I require Windows Server 2000/2003 and Exchange in order to run 3rd party servers for my customers, but for another business Linux may be better due to costs or the lower system requirements, etc. It all comes down to what you require in day to day use.

I know everyone thinks that microsoft is a mega bucks corporation, only interested in getting more money from the likes of us, and that windows is a big bug infested piece of junk, and, well, your right.

But my windows installation hasn't crashed once this year. Not once.

And when you think we don't pay for it, who's complaining?

ive heard it needs just 3-4 :p idk, but hey XP has a minimum of 256mb to function, so mayb 3-4 is the min for this. an 8 ghz processor prob in intel (thats 3ghz in AMD terms? haha) or somethin, i think those settings are for optimum performance, but like someone else said, i wont even try it.

Hmmm, I want it but not for $600. I think we're looking at a mere 512MB's or ram, 2GHz proc, and a few gigs of h-drive space, and probably 64Mb's or vram to boot, but then again those are the minimum specs and I can't confirm those, I just think I say something like that somewhere. If the system requirments were as high as you were saying then either MS doesn't plan to sell the product, or they want to push the release date to 2008, or "when it's done".

Okay I'm seeing this: "Microsoft's solution for the PC buyer's dilemma is the Longhorn Ready PC program, to debut sometime in early 2006. To qualify for the program, PCs must sport a modern CPU, 512MB of RAM and a commitment from the OEM to ship a special graphics component for Longhorn, called the Longhorn Display Driver Model (LDDM), within 90 days of Longhorn's release. To qualify, the Longhorn graphics drivers can be included on a CD with the system or made available online for customer download."
And then I'm seeing this: "Microsoft is expected to recommend that the "average" Longhorn PC feature a dual-core CPU running at 4 to 6GHz; a minimum of 2 gigs of RAM; up to a terabyte of storage; a 1 Gbit, built-in, Ethernet-wired port and an 802.11g wireless link; and a graphics processor that runs three times faster than those on the market today."

So I don't know who's right but I can't see technology advancing that quickly, since 2003 I don't think we've seen such a huge increase in processing speeds, storage space, and ram size, like in 2003 a decent PC would have like a 2Ghz proc, 256MB's or ram, and a 40-80gig h-drive, and a gfx card with at least 64MB's or vram. Now a decent PC is like 3Ghz P4, 512MB's of ram, a 120 gig h-drive, and a gfx card with 128Mb's or vram, no huge difference really. And to think Win XP was a major overhaul at the time and it only needs like 128Mb's or ram, a dinky little proc at like 500Mhz or something, and a mere 8Mb's or vram, so I doubt things would change this much.

id still rather wait a year after the release so they write how to fix all the flaws that I KNOW microsoft will definately incorporate into longhorn, although a 3D desktop will be pretty cool

Longhorn will run with older graphics cards however the dektop will be a flat static display. In order to run the Aeros 3d desktop the requirements will be you have to have a DX9 capable video card.

The one thing I'm not sure about right now is how Trustworthy Computing is going to work. I know when they first brought it up when it was still Palladium they were going to require new processors with DRM, not sure if it's still going to be a requirement or not. I'm guessing not, but with Intel coming out with chipsets with DRM built in who knows.

Haha! Yeah that will open up new worlds for sure. Though I don't like the idea of the desktop alone being a performance hog.

I'm sure I'll obtain my copy somehow.

And if my website business is at all profitable as it sounds, then I might even actually purcahse a legal copy of my tools of the trade..not that I don't already, of course.
