micro advantage dvd&cd rewritable drive

Hi i installed my dvd burner with nero burning software. I have tried to burn dvd onto dvd-r's and it goes through the process of burning and at the end it says error log file and wont burn the cd. I do have a cd burner installed on this computer and the cables are hooked up to the secondary ide on the motherboard and the cd burner is the master and dvd burner is the slave. I really want to burn home movies and slide shows so we can watch them on the dvd player. Can anyone help?

I use roxio, but it costs money and for troubleshooting money isn't something that's good to use.
