Having had to get a new HD bBecause the old one had died I fitted as intructed and started the computer. I entered the BIOS and asked for the new HD to be recognised. No joy. Nor was there any joy for the CD drive. Many checks and rechecks and hours later still no joy. Is this a hint that I need a new motherboard?

Any advice will be most welcome.

There can be many reasons why the hdd isn't recognized:

    1) One of the connectors on your IDE cable is a different color than the other ones, that'S the one that you plug on your motherboard. The other end is the master connector and the middle connector is the salve.

    2) The jumper on your hdd (if any) should be set to master w/ slave IF you plug another IDE device on the same channel, if not, then it should be set to master only.

    3) I assume the hdd will be the one you boot with, so it needs to be on the 1st IDE channel.

    4) The red pin on the data cable should be on the power connector side of the hdd.

    5) In your BIOS (check your motherboard manual), make sure the IDE channels you need are enabled.
