Tried to download SP3 update. This failed and then my problems started.XL won't open without the message "trying to configure office XP with front page" this fails with the message "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailible". Its looking for "installation package PROPLUS.MSI" which cannot be found. Now any download for office pro xp fails with same messages. Cannot use system restore either. The PC came loaded so I do not have any discs. My PC is not networked. I have tried all the MS support suggestions without success. Can any of you boffins help?

I have no idea how to correct your error :( but as with nearly all of Micro$oft's products you can correct it by completely re-installing it!
However, you might want to take this opportunity to switch to "Open Office", an open-source office suite.
This means that it will work under just about any operating system, on any hardware base. It can read and create files in the MS Office format (and may others), and its completely FREE (and legal) to download it, use it, modify and send copy's to your friends & family (or complete strangers!).
You will also receive updates, and be able to download future versions free of charge.

This may or may not help...about 6 months ago, I ran into an issue that was similar to this, where it seemed that whatever i did to install/uninstall office seemed to get back to the same point, it would not allow me to install a certain piece of ms office(outlook). I then tried to to a service pack upgrade(both os, and office) and it would not allow me to do it...I stumbled into the logic to remove the present SP(for it was corrupted), and reinstall it. Once I did it, it allowed me to upgrade to the latest service pack, and then to install all the office updates. All error messages went away...hope it helps...;)
