msi k8n / xfx 6800LE crashes in fullscreen

Hi,

I have a problem with my computer. When I play games like Pro Evolution Soccer or Quake 4, it crashes.
It doesn't crash when I play the games in windowed mode, but as soon as I go to fullscreen, it may take a few minutes, but often the game crashes instantly. This almost always happens not during gameplay, but when, for instance, calling the menu or loading a new game.

My configuration is as follows;
MSI K8N
AMD 64 3400
1024 MB Ram
xfx 6800LE
Soundblaster Live!
Western Digital 180 GB HD

Before I used the latest detonator WHQL drivers from Nvidia, yesterday I removed them and installed the default drivers that came with the videocard, but to no avail. The videocard is a bit slower in Quake4, but still crashes after some time.

Does anybody have any tips as to what maybe causing this?

Have you got DirectX 9.0c installed?
Also, your not using WindowBlinds by any chance are you?

Yes I have the latest DirectX 9.0c, and don't have WindowsBlinds.

I am using RamIdle, but it hasn't helped turning that off.

What are your system temps including your video card?
Also, what PSU do you have?

GPU core temp: 52 C
Ambient temp: 31 C
Core slowdown threshold at: 135 C

My power supply is 350W

That might be your problem right there. 350W is pretty low, and even from a good company like Antec or Enermax, that's probably not enough. A good 480W unit with around 25A on the 12V rail, is a general rule of thumb for a high performance rig. Antec, Sparkle, Fortron and Enermax have 500W or greater power supplies than run under $100, and probably closer to $80 if you look around. Stay away from Q-Tec(nology) and Ultra power supplies.

The other thing you should check is your RAM. Use [google]Memtest[/google] to do this. Run it overnight and see if you get any errors, if you do you've either got some mis-tweaked RAM timings or a stick of bad RAM. That's what I'd do first. Next, check for any patches for the games you're having trouble with.
