Now.. i have around 600 quid to spend, what do i go for!!?? Do i go for a: 754pin 64bit 3000+, HyperX 466mhz 512mb, MSI Neo Platinum & a 6800GT or a 939pin 64bit 3500+ HyperX 466mhz 512mb, MSI Neo Platinum (939) & a 9800Pro or 6800LE (8 pipelines) both with 80GB hdd and 480W PSU, floppy & dvd-rom. I would ideally like to be investing in a new machine that i can build / upgrade apon in the future if necersary without spending out on new ram and motherboards.. ie 939, but are there any new processors coming out or not for 754? Please post with the "PIN" of the processor you think i should go for.. i presume 939 will be long term the better option..
I'd definately go for socket 939. I don't think there are any more CPUs available to upgrade to for the 754. Even though you'll have to skimp on the GFX card a bit. You could just use a cheap one until you can get enough money for the 6800GT. Also with the S939 you can upgrade to the FX range of CPUs aswell as the standard A64s. S939 FXs also do not need registered RAM unlike the 940 ones.
In the long term S939 will be better because it has dual-channel memory controllers. From what I understand, S754 will be the budget socket for AMD chips. You also might be able to save some $$ by going with some cheaper DDR now and then saving up and getting something high-performance a little later down the road. In otherwords, maybe get some Corsair Value-line PC3200 (DDR400) now, and then later go with 1GB of PC3500 or better.
