There is always a reason, it's just that you don't know it yet. There are a lot of things that can cause lockups, and a virus isn't even the first one that comes to my mind. With Windows, the first thing I look for is spyware. There's also registry corruption, filesystem fragmentation, poor/corrupted drivers, glitchy TSR software, or bad hardware. First I'd read and follow the advice in this thread. Afterwards, I'd download Memtest86+ and run a test on that machine overnight. Even one memory error is one too many. If everything still checks out, remove any TSR software that is not crucial for the system's basic functionality and defragment thoroughly. Then download and reinstall the latest version of DirectX followed by the chipset, video, sound and any other applicable drivers. Also make sure Windows is 100% patched and up to date with all the latest fixes MS has released. They may still have dozens of unpatched vulnerabilities, but that's no reason not to at least utilize the patches they have released. Let us know how it goes...

    All the best,
    -AT

You could also try to run the File System Check utility.

Click on 'Start' - 'Run' and then in the new window type (here is the tricky part because I cannot remember the actual order) fsc or cfs and hit enter. The computer will then start checking your file system for errors. The only problem with this process is that you will need your windows installation disk (or rescue disk).

Try and acertain when the computer is freezing and is there a patern of behaviour.

Other than that I think AT covered most angles....
