you probably can't assign your HDD to C: because C: is probably already assigned (possibly assigned to your CD)

reassign whatever is assigned to C: (if it is your CD, reassign it to D:)
then assign your HDD to C:

Maybe using a partition program like acronis. You can then change the drive letter to C:, and then make that partition active, if it won't bot anymore. But make sure to create a bootable media, just in case.

right, i think i've found it, you'll need your XP CD, in the /Tools folder i think you'll find deploy.cab, copy deploy.cab to your HDD, then extract sysprep 2, then just copy it somewhere on your HDD, i think this is about the best manual for sysprep, there are some on MS.com but i think this is better

    sorry, i should have said
no, although a clean install would also solve the problem

you don't even have to reinstall, run sysprep.exe (with the -reseal and -mini switches) from a command prompt. This will remove some info from the registry and cause XP to reboot and re-run a portion of setup (network setup, basically). However, once this has been run, XP will now be on C: instead of I:

Edit: it forces Win to rerun part of setup and restores some setting

You cannot change the drive letter on the drive the OS is installed on. While you can change the drive letters of other drives, it's not allowed for the OS.

If you have multiple drives, the best way to do it is to leave one optical drive for installing the OS and the hard drive that you will install it on it plugged in. Leave everything else unplugged (pulling the power should do the job just fine.
