i v got a dell lat P3 with external cd and i want to install windows on it. for start it will not accept to "see" its cd rom ...when i try to boot from the start up disc it says "no cd drive found" ! i have found the drivers for the cd but it still does not work. does anyone know how to link the machine to another laptop which recognizes its cd and this way install windows on the first one? .....thanks

Look carefully for CD-Rom when the computer POSTs. If you have to, press the Pause button - right of scroll lock

You don't need drivers for any standard cdrom, except externals. You won't be able to install windows through an external drive unless your motherboard has capabilities of booting to the device. Maybe enable try other boot devices in BIOS. Is the drive USB?

i guess the mothermoard does not boot to the device. yes the external cd rom has a usb cable to connect to the laptop. what other devices are you suggesting to boot from???
I have the start up disc but when it gets to the point that needs the cd drive to read the windows program (in order to install win.) it says: "cd drive not found".
do u think i can use another device that reads cds?

I think you need to hookup an internet cdrom for it to work. I really don't know, you should consult a manual or call tech support if you can
