When I try to play a DVD (video), Windows says there is no disc in the drive (It does this for both my DVD ROM and DVD RW drive). Yet a standard data DVD or data CD works fine. I've figured out it's not Windows, as I ran Kubuntu 64-bit LiveCD and Linux wouldn't play the DVD, but would recognise there was a disc in. One of my drives is a Pioneer DVR-109 and has the latest firmware on. The other is an MSI MS-8216.

    Thanks, Thomas

What program are you using to play DVD videos?

Yep, discs are clean, and I have tried more than one. It seems to be only commercial discs (original copies) that don't play, as home made movies play fine. Windows won't recognise that the disc is in, and Kubuntu recognises there's a disc in, but you can't play the disc as a movie, just browse the files on the disc. If the disc would play, I would be using Windows Media Player or Cyberlink PowerDVD.

    Thanks, Thomas

That's odd. I have the DVR-109 myself, and I've yet to have any problems playing DVD movies or data ones. I wonder if for some odd reason, there's some copy protection acting up.

You might want to check and see if this copy protection called Starforce has been installed. I don't have a link, but I do know that it causes all sorts of hell, and has been known to permanently damage recording drives. I don't think it is, but it's worth looking into.

Also, I assume you've run some spyware and anti-virus and come up clean?

Yes run AVG Free and Adaware SE and removed anything that came up but no change. I'm going to try the DVD drive in a different computer that runs Kubuntu tomorrow and see if that works.

I've just installed Windows on a 4gb hard drive (huge, I know), and installed PowerDVD, and DVDs play fine.

It must be Windows that's playing up. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what software might be causing this? Programmes running are:

    Windows Live Messenger 8.0.792
    Nokia PC Sync
    AVG Free
    Creative Volume Control
    Sapphire TRIXX Graphics card utility

There could be some others in the background, but I'm not sure.

    Thanks, Thonmas
