Network Security

I wanted to know how network security oriented some of your jobs were.

If you can say, what kind of software/hardware do you use to help keep your network secure. (kinda toutchy question I know)

What are some good things to be familiar with? (programs etc.)

Is the security field a good solid place to focus on?

There are soooo many subjects within the security field to specialise in, at university I opted to do a semester of computer forensics - reading a book about that would touch on pretty much every part of network security if you wanted to take a wholeistic view before you decide on any particular part

And no its not 'solid' but what in the computing world is? You have to work to keep up to date as technologies advance.
