The store I am going to order my new system at, finally got a batch of new graphics cards in; which means I can pick a Point Of View GeForce 8800GTS 640MB instead of EVGA GeForce 8800GTS KO 640MB , which makes a difference of €72, not bad for a saving. Also decided on get a new keyboard&mouse combos (the current ones are old, dirty and do not match the color of the new case [beige and gray :p ] ) and a pair of 2.1 speakers.

Going to order it as soon as I make sure there is enough money on my (bank) account.

yeah EVGA are "apparently" better.. however i think the one your getting will be fine! the 8800gts are an awesome gpu and u will be able to play some unreal games on it no matter who puts their sticker to it..

however with your processor cant u get a quad? the price cuts have brought the quad price down to pretty much the same price as a core 2 duo..

i would suggest u get Vista if u want to take advantage of you graphic cards full protential(DX10)..

im not sure how much your speakers are but i do know the logitech X-530's are really cheap and their 5.1 surround sound with woofer so check them out.

other than that ur ram choice is perfect and ur video ard will dominate games on max settings but just check out the processor prices not saying theres anything wrong with the one ur getting just the quad is more future proof and great for muti tasking without an ounce of lag:)

Yeah, that was my reasoning too... choosing between "super-awesome" and "superawesome+1", super-awesome is fine with me if there's a saving ... I want a really powerful system, but still keep check a bit on the total cost.

That's about €100 more expensive, in all stores over here. Also, my local PC Gaming magazine says it'll be a while until games will make optimal use of those (heck, most are only starting to make use of dual-core technology...)

I know where you are coming from, but I don't need to play any DirectX10 games for a while yet... only one I'd want to play is Alan Wake, but for one game... besides I like the familiarity of XP better... if I want to see something new&shiny I can always boot into Linux+Compiz Fusion. I might install Vista later though, couple of years from now (2009 at the last).

They are a bit more expensive than the X-530's. But after looking at my room lay-out, I concluded that there's just no space to place (and places to put/mount) the speakers in the correct way. That's why I opted for a 2.1 set with good all-round quality. Right now I have "2.0" sound (no, not web 2.0 :p )

I'm hoping this system will last me some 3-4 years without upgrades, but seeing as the games that are now in development will be tested with those cards, I'm confident that will be possible. In any case, spend a little more the case and PSU so that upgrades would be easier. The motherboard supports Quad Core processors too (although mobo's aren't all that expensive).

I'm budgeting about €500 - € 800 for future upgrades (such as graph. card, perhaps Ram, CPU and MOBO).

wow the Q6600 quad is soo cheap here i found one the other day for just over $300 aus and thats cheaper than the E6600 C2D so im happy:P and yer ur right theres no programs or games that take use of the quad but thats why i call it future proof:D just incase i need it oneday i guess:)

yeah alot of people are still with xp i loved xp its a great simple program but the look of vista and DX10 got me suckerd in BIG time.. im buying the 8800GTX or maybe the ultra so i definately want dx10 to be onhand:)

anyway goodluck with ur build should be a great pc when ur done:)
 
I don't understand... why don't you get HD 2900XT? It's cheaper than 8800 GTS and it stands nearby 8800GTX by its performance. 8800GTS is not competitor for 2900XT.

By the way, 8800 Ultra is not worth its money. So if you have enough money, get GTX and you will save some for your CPU.

Larger power consumption, and I like nvidia better, since they make decent drivers for Linux, unlike ATI. Are you sure about the performance though? The reviews I read still put the 8800GTX at the top in practically all test...
 
ATI drivers are not completed yet. Right, HD2900XT performance is not the same as 8800GTX. But it's very close as the new drivers version has been released ;)

It's more worth its money doesn't matter power consumption and noise level.
 
well at first a lot of producers just stick a name on the original fan so if you can't see any difference from the referance card of nvidia's original 8800gts buy the point of view's

don't think of memory coolers, they are 14$ but you gonna save 72£

hd2900xt is not giving close performance compared to 8800gtx, but the price is too good for that kind of card, we will see it in the future that 512bit gddr4 memory will make its benefit i am using the sapphire branded one but considering your budget it will be costly, if it won't be, don't hesitate for buying hd2900xt

don't buy twinx, have a look for xms2 high performance 1 gb modules or 2gb kit, prices are nearly similar and you will see the performance, will worth money ( i'm using them too @880mhz with no problems at 5-5-4-12)

sniper, you're thinking of quad core and it just make me laugh at all, what benefit will you have from it exactly we can't use even dual core fully today what you gonna do with quad core (it's like 911 carrera s coupe is compared to a dodge viper, viper's 8300cc engine gives you just the payment brief at the end of the month)

8800ultra is just a factory overclocked version of gtx, they just change the cooler and board structure of card, just as nvidia do with 5700 ultra or 5900ultra, or even 7900gtx (considering 7800gtx, just a few changes like clockspeed increase etc. while ati increased vertex pipelines upgrading to x1900 from x1800)

vista i nothing for today's computers, needless to install i clearly understand that, security is not something that you make your decision for a program control, vista gives you full responsibility of your system

if you want full performance from your gfx install tiger os x, its the only os that gives you what you deserve considering performance, with a few tweaks for xp you can take a satisfying performance from the new card, and even x64 xp is better than vista

i recommend you not to expand your budget more than 1500$ beacuse everyday another cpu or gfx is produced and i'm just getting tired of it you know what i mean (penryn, barcelona etc.)
 
I ordered the system today B) ; it should arrive end of next week (due to a wait of some components they did not have in stock anymore).

Only change I made is, I switched from Corsair RAM to Crucial RAM, because reading around it is considered a very good brand for RAM. Probably doesn't change much though, cost about the same (as the same type of Corsair RAM).

Right now, I'm playing Runaway 2: The Dream of The Turtle... which is plain ol' adventure humor&fun, and shows you that you don't need a state-of-the-art system to have fun. But hey, it can't hurt... esp. with all the games coming up ;)
