Ok, I am looking at processors that I will hopefully have by the end of the year. I was wondering about the Athlon 64 4000+ vs. the Athlon 64 X2 4200+. I am looking for some middle ground, between the 64 line and the FX and X2 lines. The 4200+ splits the price btween the 4000+ and the FX-55, but I don't know if it is worth it. Should I invest in the X2 and take the extra it costs out of my video card budget, or get the 4000+ and spend the leftovers on a kick *** card (got my eyes on a X850XT or XTPE).

not many things are really multithreaded these days, and the X2 4200 has less performance than a FX55 and is slightly below par on single thread than a 4k+

If I had a choice it would be between the X2 4200 and a san diego core 4k

1 mb L2 cache of course :good:

Yea I'm looking at the San Diego, but do you think by the end of the year it will be worth it?

What do you want to use it for? Okay I know you want gaming obviously (judging from your card and what I know about you) but the X2 series speeds up common days tasks and multiple apps by a huge margin, the 4000+ can touch it there. But if gaming is your main focus save your money and get a the 4000 and that vcard. I'm for the X2 4200 myself but whatever you need.

****, I was really hoping for a definative answer, but it looks like I will, once again, have to make my own choices.

Alright, my definate answer is the X2, it's barely slower than the 4000+ in games, you won't even notice, overclock it and it will zoom right ahead, but you'll still be able to enjoy all the perks of multiple apps going at full click. Buy the 4200 and brag:)

yeah i'd pick the 4200 too if it came to it, you have our blessing man

it's gonna come in alot more handy than the other and when 64 bit multi thread apps come out, you'll be ready

Sweet, yea that will be nice. I figure that at the end of the year I will have anywhere between 700 and 1200 dollars.
