I'm building a system right now and having a hell of a time deciding whether or not to get a 975x based mobo and 2 x1950xtx cards or one of those new evga nforce 680i based motherboards and 2 7900gtx's. The price will end up being about the same. If I get the nforce board then I'm confined to nvidia cards only. If I get the 975x then I may consider upgrading when ATI releases its dx10 cards. Considering the equal price, upgrade options, and most importanly -- your personal preference (and why), which would you choose? Thanks!
2 X1950XTX cards will beat 2 7900GTX's so i would recommend going with the ATi option, or buying one Nvidia 7950GX. Nvidia have just released there DX10 cards, the 8800GTX and the 8800GTS, The GTS is £381 not sure how much there selling in the us, but anyway, they would easilly beat either of those options above i rekon, but maybe your aiming to go ATi for DX10? If you get the Nvidia motherboard, i dont belive you will be stuck to Nvidia cards only, you can run 1 ATi card, so with Nvidia Sli motherboards you cant do 2 ATi cards and with ATi Crossfire baords you cant do 2 Nvidia cards.
Yup. Going with an ATi-based motherboard, the only thing you can't do is run SLI and vise versa. Now, this is a driver limitation, so it's not the hardware. Unfortunately, there's no official support for unsupported platforms, and nVidia, at least, tends to quash ways around this. One thread is enough, however.
The X1950XTX's would really kill the 7900's but keep in mind that a single 8800GTX is close to the power of two X1950's in certain tests.
