My pc was working fine up until yesterday afternoon, now the keyboard and mouse both don't work(both are usb, no PS/2 ports). I can see the other usb devices working, and the wireless usb card does connect to the network, and the light is flashing.

I have tried unplugging all the usb devices but the keyboard, and all the usb devices but the mouse. Also the boot messages flash very quickly, but I think I can see it says M*something or other* (I think its short, around 3 letters).

I have also tried using the boot disc, but the hard drive is set to boot before the cd.

    cheers

Yea! I am not a fan of USB keyboards & mice, You said that you had other USB ports working, Will the mouse or keyboard work on that port ? Has there been any power surges there lately ?

I have tried different ports, there was some five second long power cuts a couple of days back but it worked since then.

Try another keyboard and mouse to see what happens, next try safe mode f8 at startup,
once in safe mode, test keyboard and mouse if you can..Are you running a surge
protector ? a power surge or lightning strike near by will destroy a computers mother board..

The keyboard doesn't work at all neither does the mouse, so can't enter safe mode, the pc will boot ok though(just no keyboard and mouse, so stuck at desktop).

Can anyone tell me of a way to be sure of which part is the problem?

edit: keyboard and mouse both work on other systems, other usb devices appear to be powered on

edit2: Replaced motherboard everything now fine.
