what your saying is not very clear . is there any sound coming out of the speakers?? or is it just related to the headphones??? if headphones and speakers don't make a sound then you probably have to download the latest drivers for the sound card in your mates system and give it to him via a usb stick or something.

Ok first, try not to plug in the Headphones in the FRONT of the computer, since the front connections might have been disconnected from your motherboard... although this is a rare case. SO, just to be safe plug in your headphones in the back of the computer (the I/O)

Second, click Start > Control Panel. Once Control Panel is opened open the Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices link. After that click Sounds and Audio Devices. A properties window will pop up with many audio options. If you cannot move the VOLUME SWITCH and have some options like MUTE disabled... then you need to do what Pimp739 wrote and install your latest audio drivers that came with the motherboard.
