found some more information, but it seems that they are only going to code for the 8 series cards.... so i guess this would be a marketing move as well.
Not necessarily. They had stuff that wasn't used until recently that's been introduced with the GeForce Ti 4's. My guess is that nVidia's introducing them, not for the marketing (although I'm sure they're aware of those benefits), but to lay the groundwork for GP-GPU's in the silicon. I'm not a programmer, but I imagine testing out software for hardware that doesn't exist is a tad difficult.
