p3 450mhz upgrade??

hi guys ,
i`m a computer novice and have a p3 450mhz.
my main question is can i just buy a mobo bundle of up to 2400mhz p4 and will this,with correct memory,be ok?
i`m not a games player so am not bothered about graphics cards etc.
a new computer not a option at the mo 5month old baby boy steals all dosh at the mo.
any thing else i should think of?
in future bigger hd and dvd rw,for photos mainly

a new power supply, the old one may not be powerful enough to run a new motherboard and processor. Everything should run fine, but you'll have to reinstall windows to run it on a new motherboard
 
If you mean a CPU/motherboard/CPU heatsink combo...no. Unless you get a very early Pentium 4, you're going to need to jump to DDR as that's what's supported now. If you get the very latest and greatest, you may even need DDR2. Additionally, I highly doubt your current power supply is adequate to handle a new P4. I don't know what OS you use, but Windows 9x started to have some issues with any CPU around 1GHz and up. If you still have it, you will need to go to Windows 2000 or XP as 9x is pretty much toast in supported OSes for drivers, programs, etc. Also, you're going to find issues supporting these larger several hundred GB hard drives with the older OS's.

For simple photo editing, you have enough processing power as is. If anything RAM would be the biggie that would give you the biggest advantage for photo editing.

The other thing is your budget...of course.
 
yeah ram helps a lot in photo editing, last night I was editing photos with some friends just screwing around, and last night I also picked up 512mb more of ram. The effects are applied so much faster in Gimp now. Everything is so much faster. Huge difference from 256mb.
