Hey guys and gals I have a Dell Powerdge 2500 server that I am trying to add a PERC 3 RAID controller onto. I have all the parts installed except the memory. I want install a 128MB stick but I don't know what type to install/order. Can anyone tell me the type of RAM I need? Dell Support wouldn't give me the time of day... all they wanted to do was sell me a complete kit which I don't need. Thanks.
I'm guessing it's SDRAM with Registered and/or ECC on it. Do you have a link to the card? I might be able to give you a more clear idea of exactly what you need. I can tell you that it won't be a standard SDRAM stick and have some extra capabilties.
BigB was right, it takes Registered ECC SDRAM , up to 4gb. Kingston sells their 128mb stick $65, their 256mb stick $77 and this at a much higher price, but I don't know why exactly.
That link leads to the system itself, not the controller card. Sorry to point that out but it may very well be different RAM. However, any realiable high end RAID controller card that uses RAM in this fashion, i.e., the use of a replaceable memory module, uses ECC. Were talking about the transfer of massive amounts of data that needs to be put back together correctly so most likely it uses ECC. But then again, I'm finding very little on these particular RAID controllers. They might be a proprietary design exclusive to Dell. I do know that LSI uses ECC in all their cards though so I would say that most likely it uses ECC. There are a number of models that I have come across in my searches though, so a bit more information on the particular model that you have may help a bit.
