This question may sound dumb but i'm clueless about the innards of PCs

My wife has a small tower PC and we want to cheaply upgrade her from 900 mhz .

We went to Tiger-direct and looked at the MB/Cpu packs that they sell, but I don't have the slightest idea how to tell if a MB will fit into a small case.

Is there a designation letter or number that tells?

They had a nice MB from AMD-Duron with 1.8 mhz processor that we liked for less than $100 bucks.

    Any help is appreciated

Its an old Packard Bell box.

Is that what you needed to know?

I think Ninja asked that question because "clone" motherboards come in basically 2 designs these days .. AT or Baby AT. They all have standard placements for the external ports and connectors -- which become a problem when dealing with boxes like those from say Compaq or in your case, possibly, Packard Bell. So unless you've got a box that uses the common motherboards that we talk about in this forum, you may not be able to upgrade your system. I suggest bringing your box to the dealer to be sure it can be done. They can also see if you have enough room for the bigger fans that "DURON" requires as well as check your PSU to see if it can handle the new mobo/CPU upgrade. Best of luck!

Thanks guys, decided to avoid problems with this by just getting a new tower and scrapping the old.

    Thank you
