Problem installing ALSA driver

Hi all

I am trying to install the latest 1.0.9b ALSA driver.
I have downloaded, extracted and now trying to install by typing ./configure in terminal.

The process starts but ends in:

checking for kernel version... The file /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h does not exist.
Please, install the package with full kernel sources for your distribution
or use --with-kernel=dir option to specify another directory with kernel
sources (default is /usr/src/linux).

I searched for the file and found it in /usr/include/linux.
However, when I tried to point the installer in that direction (using the "--with-kernel=dir command) I got the same lines at the end.

Any ideas?
 
So much is automated and/or included in Mandriva that you should really check the Mandriva way of doing something before you try the generic Linux way of doing it, especially regarding modules and the like. The Mandriva way may just be a whole lot easier, or the entire process may be completely unnecessary. In your case, you could mess up the whole system by breaking your existing modules.

Come to think of it, I remember another guy having issues with his cheap C-Media based sound card on Mandriva (yes, I read your other thread before you deleted it). He got it sorted out and the problem turned out to be something trivial. It might have been that he had multiple sound cards in his system (integrated sound and his c-media), and the c-media card was muted or something like that. Do you have a similar situation? Is your onboard sound disabled in your BIOS?

Thanks for the reply.
C-Media is my only audio chip and it is on-board. As far as I know it is enabled.
I thought I will update it. I am having a few problem, generally, setting up audio on my system and I though that updating my driver might help.

I have..... I tried to see if the updated driver was available through the software installation utility. But it was not there....

More to the point, when I try to set up my audio device I have two drivers options, chosen by the system, which I do not recognise. That is one of the reasons I though I might have to install a newer version of the recommended driver. Second, I have a volume control on my control which does not seem to effect the volume. Only when I show the 'Mixer' I can then set the volume via the 'PCM' slider..... :confused:

Any ideas? The two drivers available to me at the moment are - ALSA via82xx and the ALSA via82cxxx_audio.

Any ideas?

In your case the sound drivers included should work, but from what you're telling me about your mixer something may be muted (or turned down all the way) and the GUI mixer doesn't provide access to it. Try running alsamixer from shell. Use the arrow keys to scroll left and right and to raise/lower the volume, and "m" to mute or unmute a channel. Feel free to have some music playing while you're doing this so the difference becomes immediately apparent. Just make sure whatever sound program you're using is utilizing the ALSA (and not OSS) sound system to avoid any possible variables in that respect.
 
I am using Kmix which is the default sound control sytem (was there when I first booted into Mandriva). How can I check what Sound System it utilises and can I choose a different system and how will I replace the Kmix?

Sorry, you're confusing the sound system with the mixer application. As I stated, play music in an audio player (e.g. XMMS, amaroK) using the ALSA engine (see each program's individual settings) and use alsamixer (from shell) to make sure nothings muted or turned all the way down.
