When this new memory type comes out there's no doubt we'll see a massive boom in the video industry, you'll see: "MEMORY IP FIRM said it has released XDR2, which is a high bandwidth memory interface technology. The interface, the firm said, uses a microthreaded DRAM core with data rates flying along at 8GHz. That, it said, will make it five times faster than the fastest GDDR DRAM products. And that's where the technology is aimed at - at 3D graphics, video imaging, and network routing and switching apps, said Rambus. Other features of XDR2 include adaptive timing, that compensates for voltage and temperature variations, while the microthreading will help minimise power consumption, Rambus said." The Inquirer
Rambus did have faster speeds than equivilent SDRAM, but not better performance. RDRAM was very fast, but only 16 bit. Think of it in terms of a motorcycle vs a greyhound bus. Of course the motorcycle is going to move faster, but which would you prefer if you had to move 100 people a relatively short distance?
