really confused

ok, yesterday i couldn't connect to the net (which is not unusual with broadband, apparently)

and when it didn't work this morning, i thought, strange.

by about 11:30 i knew this wasn't right, because, the DNS servers were set to use opendns's servers but they were in fact using virgin.net's default DNS's

namely

Opendn's
Primary DNS = 208.67.222.222
Secondary DNS = 208.67.220.220

Virgin.net's DNS
Primary = 194.168.4.100
Secondary = 194.168.8.100

at about 1:30 i noticed my phone was dead (no dial tone)

so, i used the Carelink system installed in my property to ask for help, because, i didn't have a clue what was happening

when the warden from Carelink arrived, i was explaining what had happened, & she also heard the dead phone, then, the phone that wasn't working rang, i thought, weird, it was a BT engineer & he said "the fault was fixed" but i am still confused by my router being told to use open dns but it's actually using virgin's

look at the config pages yourself


BTW: i know the secondary DNS is set to virgin, it does automatically change back to virgin's secondary DNS

can anyone please explain this, as i would like to understand this before i switch to my new router

When you change the DNS settings, they are stored in the running config and not in the startup config. This means that when the router is reset (by yourself or by itself if it has crashed), then these settings are restored to their defaults (in this case the address of the DNS server of Virgin).

Some routers (especially the ones provided from your ISP) have the ability to crash. If you got your phone connected through the same system, it won't work either. The best way is to reset your router if that problem occurs.

i've actually reset / rebooted (to factory defaults) the router many times since i switched to OpenDNS, surly, a reset to factory defaults removes all data ?

BTW: got a new flashy, sparkley router[ot]the new one is compatible with ADSL, ADSL2 & ADSL2+, DDNS, dual VoIP & it will do everything i ever want to do on the net, but, i've got a hell of a lot to learn[/ot]
