Hey,
For a short summary, you might want to skip to the last question.
So I got a new CRT just about 2 or 3 weeks ago, a Viewsonic E90. Its a low end 19" monitor, .27 dot pitch, it says its optimal viewing is 1280x1024 at 80hz, and it boasts that this configuration will provide hours of comfortable working. With this configuration I can't read for more than 15 minutes without straining my eyes very hard. Please note I have all proper drivers loaded. I have absolutely 20/20 vision, before this I used a 12.1 inch lcd for the same ammounts of time as this new CRT with no problems ever (for years now).
I've since changed the contrast and brightness to about 50% (which seems ridiculous for any monitor), changed the colour temperature to 65k and changed the resolution to 1152x864@95hz. I also made sure to eliminate any glare. Even this reasonably strains my eyes and I can still faintly see the screen blink on white backgrounds.
My eyes are absolutely killing me! Shouldn't I be able to view 1280x1024 at 80hz (the *manufacturer's reccomended optimal configuration*) or 1280x960 at 85hz comfortably?
What configurations (please include rough brightness/contrast settings) can you folks view comfortably?
