Option 1: Hold down F8 while booting. Choose Safe Mode, and then choose Windows XP.

Option 2: When you load XP, go to Run (if possible) and enter 'msconfig'. At the tab 'boot.ini', put a check mark at SAFEBOOT, and make sure that MINIMAL is selected there. Then click on OK, and reboot back into XP.

many thanks RHochstenbach for taking the trouble to reply. the first option on f8 is not an option; boots into w7 safe mode with no further choice of o/s.
option 2? perfect! works exactly as you described.
just a quick word of explanation. having used safe mode more times than i can remember in the past, i suddenly realised that i did not know whether a flash drive (usb) was supported in safe mode. of course, i found out immediately that it's okay in w7...hence my question...it was fine in xp too!
i guess that everybody except myself already knew that:O
